Honors Sociology and Global Studies
Class of 2015
Sociology and Global Studies
Mount Juliet, TN
Valerie King, a senior, double majoring in Honors Sociology and Global Studies with a concentration in Politics and Economics, chose to attend the University of Tennessee because of the high level of academics, research, and international opportunities. In her spare time, Valerie enjoys watching movies and volunteering at the Humane Society.
On campus, Valerie is the Founder and President of the Oxfam America Club, an organization that focuses on poverty and hunger, and was chosen as one of fifty students in the United States to attend a week-long training at Oxfam headquarters in Boston. She also coordinates the Sociology Student Committee, a new organization for undergraduates in sociology. Her favorite part of the Honors Program so far has been her trip to the United Kingdom in order to present a paper she wrote at the International Critical Legal Conference. She says the Honors program has given her opportunities and support to follow her passions.
Valerie’s future plans include applying for national scholarships and fellowships, graduating in the spring, and eventually getting a PhD in Criminology. For now, Valerie is working on her senior thesis, revolving around the criminalization of immigration in the US and European Union.
