Biography

Aya Barnes serves as the Graduate Assistant for the 1794 Scholars Program.

Ms. Barnes's responsibilities include:

  • Advising students and providing them with enriched information that helps them grow in their educational journey.
  • Planning and organizing influential workshops.
  • Providing assistance with administrative tasks that further the goals of the 1794 Scholars Program.
  • Collecting information for the weekly newsletter and blog to promote the program's events and student reflections.

Aya Barnes was born and raised in Chattanooga, TN. Having recently acquired her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Tennessee, Ms. Barnes is continuing her educational growth by obtaining a Master's in Sociology with a Critical Race and Ethnic Studies concentration. Aya loves engaging in research, as she completed an undergraduate honors thesis titled “Environmental Racism: The Flint Water Crisis.” Concentrating on social inequality and injustice, Aya will continue to publicize and shine a light on discrimination that produces unequal outcomes. Ms. Barnes is eager to make an impact for the University of Tennessee and especially for the students that make it a great institution.
