1. Be thorough.
Check and double check that you have responded to all of the questions on both your honors and scholarship applications. Make sure that you have provided the correct contact information for your recommenders and (if necessary) ranked your program selections by preference.
2. Proofread your essays.
Finish your application early so that you can read over your materials multiple times before you submit them. Carefully edit for typos, spelling, and grammar. You can make changes and updates to your submitted application until the December 15 deadline.
3. Submit recommendations.
At least one letter of recommendation is required for the freshman scholarship and honors applications. The Haslam Scholars Program requires two. The letter should be from an academic source, such as a teacher or school counselor, and helps in the holistic review of applicants. Request your references early to be sure that they are submitted on time. A link will be emailed to your recommenders upon submission of your scholarship application. Recommendations can be uploaded directly into the application or mailed to UT. Any additional recommendations will automatically be added to your scholarship and honors applications.
4. Be thoughtful.
Respond to questions with robust, original answers. Show us why you want to join the Honors & Scholars community. Write new material that directly addresses each essay prompt. Don’t reuse essays.
5. Use your resources.
