We are pleased to announce the 2012 Haslam Scholars Program Finalists. Finalists are guaranteed a Chancellor’s Scholarship as well as invitation to the Fifth Annual Haslam Scholars Program Interview Weekend (March 10-11).  The Haslam Scholars Program reviewed hundreds of nominations and self-nominations and selected an incredibly impressive group of Semi-Finalists, all of whom received automatic admission to the highly selective Chancellor’s Honors Program (honors.utk.edu).  Upon further review of their application materials and after a preliminary interview with the program director, the following 30 students have been selected as the 2012 Haslam Scholars Program Finalists.

	Summer Awad Hardin Valley Academy Knoxville, TN Languages and Religious Studies Summer Awad has studied Arabic, Latin, and Mandarin Chinese. She plans to study comparative religion and imagines a career in international and intercultural affairs.
	Chris Barnes Hardin Valley Academy Knoxville, TN Biological Sciences Chris Barnes has enrolled in 13 AP courses and is a swimmer.  He is an alumnus of the Governor’s School for the Sciences and Engineering.
	Benjamin Brock Jefferson County High School Jefferson City, TN Computer Science Ben Brock serves as captain/co-captain of the Scholar’s Bowl and Debate Team and as a member the Math and Science Bowl teams and German National Honor Society.
	LaKenzie Crawford Jefferson County High School White Pine, TN Chemistry LaKenzie Crawford volunteers at Jefferson City Health and Rehab and is active in 4-H.  She was enrolled for one year at Tennessee School for the Blind.
	Franco D’Aprile Westview High School/ Chile Martin, TN / Santiago, Chile Geology & Environmental Studies Franco D’Aprile will combine study of natural and social science in an environmental studies major.  He aspires to an international career, perhaps via the United Nations.
	Sharvari Desai White Station High School Germantown, TN Computer Science Sharvari Desai is involved in dance, literature, mathematics competitions, piano, Model United Nations, student council, and badminton club.
	Amelia Dmowska Farragut High School Knoxville, TN Biological Sciences Amelia Dmowska is a violinist for the Knoxville Youth Symphony Orchestra.  She regularly engages in service in Poland.
	Ben Foust Oak Ridge High School Oak Ridge, TN Physics Ben Foust is Math Club President, member of the International Relations Club, and imagines pursuing a Ph.D. and career in natural science research.
	Keshane Gan White Station High School Germantown, TN Mathematics Keshane Gan has served his school as Knowledge and Quiz Bowl Captain and is an alumnus of the Governor’s School for Engineering in 2011.
	Sarah Hagaman Franklin High School Nashville, TN Classics Sarah Hagaman is the founder of the National Honors Society at her school, President of the National English Honors Society, and Captain of the Varsity Basketball Team.  She contributes to the Franklin High Literary Arts Magazine.
	Macy Harrison Centennial High School Frisco, TX Sociology Macy Harrison plans to major in sociology or social work.  Her interest in human society and problem-solving leads her to imagine a career in global public policy.
	Emma Hyche Dobyns Bennett High School Kingsport, TN Undecided Major Emma Hyche performs in musicals, plays the oboe, scours fashion blogs, and writes short fiction.  She imagines a career as a fashion journalist, lawyer, neither or both.
	Craig Jones Franklin High School Franklin, TN Political Science Craig Jones is student body vice president and editor-in-chief of his school newspaper.  He plans a Global Studies major and a career in international development.
	Honor Lundt Bearden High School Knoxville, TN Languages / Linguistics Honor Lundt loves languages.  She has studied Latin and French as well as literature and comparative religion and politics.  She imagines an interdisciplinary major in linguistics.
	Kelley Guinn McArtor Hutchison School Memphis, TN Communication / Spanish Kelley-Guinn is senior class president and a member of the lacrosse team.  She has long been an aspiring writer, which is how she hopes to make a living in the future.
	Sarah McFann Arlington High School Arlington, TN Biomedical Engineering Sarah McFann is an artist, ballet dancer, and student of natural science.  She plans to pursue a career in nano-scale bio-molecular engineering, such as in the area of cancer research.
	Andrew Messing Hardin Valley Academy Knoxville, TN Mechanical Engineering Andrew Messing has interned at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and is involved in robotics competitions at the state and regional level.  He is also an alumnus of the Governor’s School in Engineering.
	Ben Miller Middle Creek High School Raleigh, NC Undecided Major Ben Miller is a prospective member of the UTK Vols Swimming & Diving Team and a student whose interests range from culture to natural science and include Spanish.
	Grayson Mynatt Christian Academy of Knoxville Knoxville, TN Biological Sciences In addition to his pre-medical studies, Grayson Mynatt also anticipates study of French.  He regularly plays violin at Hillcrest Nursing Home.
	Kevin Okseniuk Ravenwood High School Nolensville, TN Aerospace Engineering Kevin Okseniuk was a 2011 National Chemistry Olympiad Finalist and received a Gold Medal for his performance on the 2011 National Spanish Exam.  His long-term interest is in wing design.
	Emily Peel Pope John Paul II High School Hendersonville, TN Humanities / Pre-Medicine Emily Peel was one of two Tennesseans to attend the 2011 Girls Nation conference.  She will major in history in addition to meeting prerequisites for medical school.
	Amanda Rehorn Harpeth Hall School Franklin, TN Biological Sciences Amanda Rehorn faints at the sight of human blood.   This alumna of a research internship at Vanderbilt University Eye Institute will major in biological sciences but not with an interest in pre-med.
	Andrea Richardson White Station High School Memphis, TN Biomedical Engineering Andrea Richardson participated in the 2010 and 2011 Carnegie Mellon University Summer Academy for Math and Science.  She is a vocalist and enjoys learning Spanish.
	Katie Lou Rogers Franklin County High School Winchester, TN Biomedical Engineering Katie Lou Rogers has undertaken several AP courses as independent studies.  She imagines earning a Ph.D., pursuing research, and someday perhaps founding her own school.
	Sahba Seddighi Farragut High School Knoxville, TN Biological Sciences Sahba Seddighi imagines a career in neuroscience or neurology.  She has studied nuclear science at Michigan State University and is currently a research intern in virology/immunology at UTK.
	Elizabeth Stanfield South Side High School Jackson, TN Undecided Major Elizabeth Stanfield is a pianist, track team captain, Beta Club President, and former student body president.  She worked with Habitat for Humanity for three years.
	Tor Voorhees Bearden High School Knoxville, TN Undecided Major – Engineering Tor Voorhees is Science Olympiad team president and past Science Bowl captain at his school.  He has served as a research intern in the UTK Department of Animal Science.
	Cole Wood McCallie School / French Study Abroad Program Hixon, TN / Rennes, France Undecided Major Cole Wood is engaged in a year-abroad program in Rennes, France.  He has studied biology at Georgia Tech and experienced the Governor’s School for International Studies as a transformative intellectual influence.
	Marica Wright White Station High School Memphis, TN Political Science Marica Wright combines academic excellence with a wide range of extracurricular activities.  She serves as a member of the Memphis City Schools Student Advisory Board and NAACP Youth Council.
	Yidan Zeng White Station High School Memphis, TN Studio Art / Computer Science An artist who wishes to combine both visual arts and computer’s capabilities, Yidan Zeng’s artwork work has been recognized in the Congressional Art Competition.
