Benefits of Participation in the Chancellor's Honors Program

Courses

University Honors (UH) seminars are available through the Chancellor's Honors Program. These courses address a constantly changing variety of special topics and are typically interdisciplinary in nature. Chancellor's Honors students also enroll in hundreds of honors-designated courses offered by academic departments across the university. As with University Honors seminars, departmental honors courses feature limited enrollments, dynamic faculty, and various academic enhancements and enrichment opportunities. Specialized course work is the foundation of the Chancellor's Honors Program.

Faculty

Chancellor's Honors Students are provided with unmatched opportunity to work with faculty from all colleges at the university. Faculty who teach honors courses, oversee Honors-by-Contract course work, and supervise Senior Projects, are committed to challenging honors students while supporting their academic ambitions. A flourishing community of students and faculty is the essence of the university and a raison d'etre of the Chancellor's Honors Program.

Research Support

The CHP has initiated a program that will provide limited research support on a competitive basis.  All honors students, including CHP students but also students in college and departmental honors programs, will be eligible to apply for $500-$2,500 grants through the Honors Research Grant Program.

Priority Registration for Courses

Priority in course registration facilitates the careful design of ambitious curricula, wherein students undertake specialized course work, international & intercultural learning, undergraduate research, and community outreach.  All honors students are invited to register for classes during the first week that the registration system is open and available.

Honors Community

Chancellor's Honors students are invited to join the Honors Community, where honors students enjoy common extracurricular activities and academic enrichment opportunities which complement their honors curriculum. Featuring four floors that house 250 predominately first-year honors students, Morrill Hall is home to the Honors Community and the site for most regular activities. Regardless of residence or graduation year, all Chancellor's Honors students are encouraged to join the Honors Community.

Priority Housing

After the first year, CHP students receive priority in the housing registration system. Taking advantage of proximity to academic resources and as a result of their positive freshman experience, many honors students choose to continue in University Housing throughout their undergraduate careers.

Advanced Library Benefits

As an honors student, you will enjoy the same privileges at Hodges Library as a graduate student. This means that you may borrow books for 16 weeks as well as reserve a carrel in the library and check books out to that carrel. Additionally, the library is conveniently located next to the Chancellor's Honors Program offices at Melrose Hall.

Honors Session of Orientation

Your Chancellor’s Honors Program experience begins with Summer Orientation, when honors students learn more about campus and register for their fall courses. Although orientation is filled on a first-come, first-served basis, reserved seats for Chancellor's Honors students ensures that most are able to attend the first week of orientation. The Chancellor’s Honors Program staff is also on-hand to answer questions.

Advising

Although not a center for routine academic advising, the Chancellor's Honors Program does offer advising pertinent to Chancellor's Honors Program requirements. The Director and Associate Director are also available to advise students concerning nationally competitive scholarships, long-term academic plans, and professional and career goals. Our doors are always open.

Chancellor's Honors Program Facilities

The CHP maintains seminar rooms, computer facilities, and an honors lounge in Melrose Hall for use by students in the program. Students are encouraged to use these facilities and to regard them as convenient places to become acquainted with one another. Unlimited access to these facilities is provided through a card reader system.

Study Abroad

Many Chancellor's Honors Program students choose to enhance their academic experience by participating in Study Abroad during their undergraduate years. Study abroad scholarships are available to all students, with CHP students achieving past success in securing funds through Chancellor's Honors Scholarships, the University of Tennessee Parent's Association, and other scholarship programs.
