Selection Process

Overview

High school seniors must request or be invited to participate in an initial interview with the director of the Chancellor’s Honors & Haslam Scholars Programs.
Finalists will then be invited to interview with a selection committee during a weekend in February.
Haslam Scholars will be named.

Key dates for the 2009-2010 selection process are as follow.

Make an appointment by calling 865-974-7875.
Open Initial Interviews must occur prior to November 1 and are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.
After scheduling your appointment, please send a digital picture of yourself to Lori Johnson at lori@utk.edu. We use this photo to identify candidates and if you are selected as a Finalist, the photo will be distributed to the selection committee and used in campus publications.
Open Initial Interviews are held in the Baker Center
Limited parking is available at the Baker Center during your scheduled interview time only.
Enter the Baker Center through the doors from the parking lot, walk straight across the rotunda toward the museum. Enter the elevator on your right.
Go to the 3rd floor to check in, the receptionist will show you to the waiting room.
If parents or guardians accompany their students to campus, they may avail themselves of a waiting room or visit the Baker Center Museum while their student completes the interview process.

Complete UT Admissions Application.
Complete the 2009 Entering Freshman Academic Scholarship Application.
Students must complete the 2010 Entering Freshman Academic Scholarship Application including the essay question.

Invitations for initial interviews will be extended to selected students who did not previously interview in the Open Initial Interview process and who submit their UT Admissions Application and their Entering Freshman Academic Scholarship Application by November 1.
Criteria for selection include evidence of academic excellence, leadership and service, and special talents.

Thirty finalists are invited to campus to interview with members of the Academic Selection Committee.
Accommodations, meals, and materials will be provided for finalists.
A program for the parents/guardians of finalists will be available.
