Academic Benefits

Like all of UT’s honors programs, the Haslam Scholars Program is built on the cornerstones of Courses, Community, Research and Ready for the World

Courses

In addition to availing themselves of the over 100 honors courses offered annually at UT, Haslam Scholars also enjoy an exclusive, high-profile curriculum that is designed to specially challenge them to reach their full scholarly and intellectual potential.  The HSP curriculum is grounded in UT’s internationally recognized strength in Medieval and Renaissance history, its collaborative management of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and UT’s flagship Ready for the World initiative. The Haslam Scholar’s coursework prepares them for an intensive program-supported joint multi-location study abroad experience, for admission to the most selective graduate and professional programs, and for competition in nationally and internationally prestigious baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate scholarships selection processes.

Community

The Haslam Scholars Program is a community of scholars and leaders.  Haslam Scholars commit to sustained and multifaceted joint learning through common experiences spread throughout the entirety of the undergraduate experience.  Working together, Haslam Scholars intensify their learning and amplify its significance for others.  As members of the Chancellor’s Honors Program, Haslam Scholars are also encouraged to participate in all its many community-building activities, including the Honors Community living/learning program, the Honors Council, and the Honors Ambassadors Program.

Research

In their junior and senior years, Haslam Scholars undertake a 6-credit hour Honors Thesis project.  Mentored by top UT faculty, Haslam Scholars are encouraged and supported in their quest to produce highly meritorious undergraduate scholarship.  Facilitating pursuit of Haslam Scholar’s ambitious research agendas, Scholars receive individual research grants of up to $4000 and an additional grant of up to $1,500 to support travel necessary for presentation of an Honors Thesis project at a national or international academic or professional meeting.

Ready for the World

Chancellor’s Honors students are required to engage in international or intercultural learning.  Haslam Scholars meet this graduation requirement, if not otherwise, through a common study abroad program in the mini-term immediately following the completion of their exclusive three-course seminar sequence, the last seminar of which explicitly addressing the phenomenon of “globalization.”  Haslam Scholars will also participate in service-learning coursework and an executive-level internship that is designed as a hands-on exploration of U.S. intercultural diversity and its relationship to social and economic inequalities.

In addition to these and other exclusive Haslam Scholars Program academic benefits, Haslam Scholars also enjoy the benefits of membership in the Chancellor’s Honors Program, which includes priority course and housing registration and extensive library privileges.
