The Haslam Scholars Program maintains exclusive partnerships with local institutions, centers of learning, laboratories, and companies to provide exceptional experiences and learning opportunities for scholars during their time at UT. These arrangements guarantee enriching experiential and internship opportunities, provide sites for engaging in research, and suit a variety of major fields of study.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a science and energy laboratory and conducts basic and applied research for the United States Department of Energy. ORNL and the Haslam Scholars Program have partnered to offer three unpaid internship options for Haslam Scholars. Scholars can (a) undergo training, participate in an internship for up to 3 semesters, and collaborate with a UTK advisor and an ORNL mentor to develop an individual, personal research plan, (b) participate in a one-semester internship program before declaring a major field of study, or (c) participate in a summer internship/research immersion program.
Students can use their research experiences at ORNL to contribute to their HSP thesis, receive internship credit for their participation, and present at campus, regional, or national research conferences.
The Haslam Scholars Program has partnered with the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine (GSM), located on The University of Tennessee Medical Center campus, to offer Haslam Scholars research experience and shadowing opportunities through short- and long-term internships. The UT Graduate School of Medicine enjoys a national reputation in education and is recognized for research programs of national merit. A part of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, the GSM partners with University Health System, Inc. to create The University of Tennessee Medical Center, which has been recognized in the “America’s Best Hospitals” edition of the U.S. News & World Report. The 2016-2017 report ranks the medical center number two in the state of Tennessee and as the best regional hospital in the East Tennessee and Knoxville region, based on its patient care performance and other key measures.
Scholars have the opportunity to design their own research project or work with clinicians on existing projects. These experiences can lead to opportunities to shadow professionals in the field, publish findings, and present at local and national conferences.
The Knox County Public Defender’s office provides legal representation and community services to Knoxville’s low-income citizens. With an understanding of the “personal, psychological, and social dynamics” of criminal behavior, the office provides legal services, social services, juvenile defense, community outreach, and youth programs to the communities of Knox County. Haslam Scholars are given the opportunity to intern or extern with the many legal and/or social programs available within the Knox County Public Defender’s office.
