School children in Luxor, drumming for the mid-day assembly where children sang to the flag of Egypt.
Sarah El-Ghazaly claims Knoxville as her current home town, though she grew up in Arizona and has had opportunity to travel the world. As a rising senior, she has been the recipient of many honors during her career at the University of Tennessee. Sarah says, "I’ve been fortunate enough to be named a Wright Scholar, a Ned McWherter Scholar, and a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar" as well as receiving departmental scholarships and awards. Sarah is in Morocco this summer traveling on her Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship where she will study for three months in Fez.
A talented vendor offers a traditional Syrian beverage in the middle of Damascus' crowded and high busy souq (market) at the entrance of Old Damascus.
Morocco is not Sarah's only study abroad destination; she has also undertaken course work at the American University in Cairo, Egypt. While in Cairo, she was able to visit Istanbul, Turkey, among other cities in the region. Though she loves the adventure and knowledge that comes with visiting a new place, Sarah says that one of her most rewarding experiences has been the opportunity to work in The Daily Beacon’s newsroom where she has been a staff writer and news editor. As a Daily Beacon staff member, Sarah has had the opportunity to work closely with the Director of Student Publications, Jane Pope, who has been a major influence in her life since she first began her studies at UT.
Sarah rests at an Egyptian monument.
Sarah has had the opportunity to develop close relationships with many UT faculty members, as well. Some of her favorite professors include Professor Palmira Brummet, Professor Thomas Burman, and Professor Catherine Higgs, all in the Department of History, and Professor Will Jennings in the Department of Political Science. She says that she enjoys their courses because, "they have all challenged me, and taking their courses has greatly informed my worldview."
Sarah's post-graduate plans include earning a masters degree in Arab Studies and then heading to law school, where she intends to concentrate in international law.
