Cody Swallows, a sophomore in Sociology and Religious Studies and a Chancellor's Scholarship recipient, not only excels in his academic and extracurricular endeavors, he also works hard to gain practical experience for his future career in the field of medicine.

Cody visits with one of his favorite residents from the healthcare center who he clams is one of the "sweetest and greatest women ever."

In the summer of 2007, after his freshman year at the university, Cody worked as a nurse assistant at Soddy Daisy Healthcare Center in Soddy Daisy, Tennessee.  In addition to his work at the center, he spent many hours in the Memorial North Park emergency room shadowing Dr. Christopher Wagg and Dr. Joseph Minton, the latter a UT alumnus.  Cody says that the two doctors were excellent teachers.

Cody was also able to shadow a neurosurgeon, Dr. Michael Gallagher of Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga.  This pairing was especially notable since Dr. Gallagher performed surgery on Cody in 1998.  Small world!

Cody's motley crew heads out to the 2006 Head of the Chattahoochee regatta in Chattanooga, where the crew came in first place among novice 8+ boats from across the southeast.

Though Cody’s summers are busy, his school year is no less so.  Cody splits his time between a demanding pre-med course load and rowing for Tennessee Crew, playing for the Chattanooga Independent Percussion Ensemble, and participating in the philosophy club.  In addition to these activities, Cody also spends many of his mornings volunteering at the clinic at Knoxville's Dogwood Elementary School, and he also finds time for active membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Phi Eta Sigma, and Sigma Alpha Lambda national honor societies.

This fall, Cody is hoping to join Alpha Epsilon Delta, the pre-medicine honor society, and volunteer at UT Medical Center.  He is also aiming to join the UT Percussion Ensemble, and is looking forward next summer to volunteering as a second assistant in surgery in a Chattanooga area hospital. Cody's career path leads to neurosurgery, and he seems well on his way.
