1. Besides teaching an honors course, how can I get involved?

Other than teaching courses, many faculty members mentor Senior Projects and help students working to complete Honors-by-Contract course work.  Faculty members are also needed to help establish departmental honors programs where they do not presently exist, and to further develop those which do.  Indeed, some faculty direct departmental honors programs or serve as an honors advisor to their college, while still others are members of the Chancellor’s Honors Program’s Faculty Policy & Curriculum Committee or the University’s Honors Steering Committee.

2. Are there opportunities to lead honors students on study abroad programs?

The Chancellor’s Honors Program does not currently sponsor any specific study abroad programs, but that could change.  We do, however, enjoy collaborating with faculty to ensure that honors students are aware of, and have every opportunity to participate in, especially challenging and enriching programs.  For example, Dr. Thomas J. Heffernan, Kenneth Curry Professor of English, annually leads a small group composed primarily of Chancellor’s Honors students to England, where they study the history of the university via London, Cambridge, Oxford, and elsewhere.

3. Does the Chancellor’s Honors Program provide funds to enhance and enrich “UH” courses?

Yes.  We have limited funds available to support enhancements and enrichment opportunities for UH 100-, 200-, and 300-level courses.  Requests may be made informally to the program director at any time.  Preference is given to requests for modest, one-time support, and those which portend to benefit the greatest number of students.  Typical requests are to support field experiences and travel, purchase films, software and other course materials, and to support guest speakers.  Collaboration with other units is encouraged and always very welcome.

4. Does the Chancellor’s Honors Program provide funds to support college- or department-sponsored honors courses?

Unfortunately, available resources do not permit us to support the many outstanding honors courses offered by departments (including those without departmental honors programs) and colleges.  We encourage faculty to request supplemental support for such courses from their department heads, program directors, or relevant dean.
