Steven P. Dandaneau joined the University of Tennessee in June, 2006. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Dr. Dandaneau is Associate Professor of Sociology (click here to view his Department of Sociology link).
A native of Flint, Michigan, Dandaneau received a B. A. in economics (with honors) from Michigan State University (1986). As an undergraduate, Dandaneau spent semesters at the University of London (1984) and Cambridge University (1986) and twice worked as a Summer Intern at General Motors Corporation.
Dandaneau earned an M. A. (1990) and Ph.D. (1992) in sociology from Brandeis University (Waltham, Massachusetts). He accepted a faculty appointment in sociology at the University of Dayton in 1992 and was subsequently awarded tenure (1999) and promoted (2000). Between 2000 and 2005, Dandaneau directed the University Honors & John W. Berry, Sr. Scholars Programs and participated in a variety of special learning opportunities that he also helped to create, including study abroad programs in Morocco, Geneva, and Paris and summer immersion programs in leadership and river stewardship. In the spring 2006, he was Visiting Professor in the Department of Sociology at University of Maryland, College Park.
Dandaneau’s primary publications are three books: A Town Abandoned: Flint, Michigan, Confronts Deindustrialization (SUNY 1996), A Wrong Life: Studies in Lifeworld-Grounded Critical Theory (with Maude Falcone, JAI 1998), and Taking It Big: Developing Sociological Consciousness in Postmodern Times (Pine Forge 2001). He is currently at work on two new books, C. Wright Mills: Last Years, Late Work and American Critical Theory: A Reader (edited with Harry F. Dahms).
Steve is the proud father of Patrick (15) and Maxwell (9), and is married to Debra Dandaneau, Ph.D., a lecturer in the UT Department of Physics. The Dandaneaus are residents of downtown Knoxville and are avid supporters of the Lady Vols.
