2011 Running for Hope

On November 12, 2011, members of the Haslam Scholars Program executed their first self-organized philanthropic project, a 5K Run to raise funds for Redeeming Hope Ministries.  Over 250 runners registered for the 5K or the 1 mile “fun run.”

The students raised close to $7,000 for the local non-profit organization, whose mission is holistic transformation for the underprivileged and homeless of urban Knoxville.  Redeeming Hope provides access to and pursues empowerment in the areas of food justice, personal and aesthetic expression, physical wellness, economic and educational advancement, spiritual growth, and genuine friendship.

Senior Haslam Scholars Chelsea KnottsElizabeth Tiller, and Caitlin Conley Wise, were the driving force behind the the creation, coordination, and execution of Saturday’s event.  With other scholars from the senior, junior, sophomore, and freshman class, the students registered event participants, contacted local businesses for support, and staffed the event the day of the run.  Many Haslam Scholars have also become regular volunteers with Redeeming Hope Ministries’ many outreach projects and programs.
